Fall means that school has started, homework has been assigned, and you have a more set schedule compared to summer. You now have limited time to hang out with friends or even to go out on dates. There is even less time to work on your finances at this young age, but that does not mean finances should not be a part of your plans. Creating good habits around your finances starts early, set yourself up now for success.

One big habit you can start practicing is planning and participating in budget friendly activities and dates. Just because the activity or date is cheaper does not mean it is mediocre. You can plan and pull-off dates and activities that are entertaining and that you would do again! Here are some easy ideas for a budget-friendly date or activity with some friends!

  1. Throw it Back and Go Bowling or Skating

These activities are generally affordable, leave time for conversation, and can be enjoyed repeatedly! When planning these activities, look for days at your local bowling alley or rink where they offer specials or discounts.

  1. Spend Time Outdoors

There are tons of ideas when considering spending time outside. For example, go for a bike ride, explore local trails, go for a hike, find a local lake or river for a swim, enjoy time at a park hammocking, go skiing and sledding, or even find a spot for a picnic! The outdoors can be grounds for a variety of different activities, and all are free or relatively cheap compared to other activities.

  1. Set Up an At-Home Movie

Going to the movies can be expensive when you are buying treats and tickets. When you set up a movie at home, you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want. Most high schoolers have access to their parent’s streaming services and can use them to display the show of choice. The next step is to make things comfortable; bring out the extra pillows and blankets! Then find treats at home, have everyone bring their own treats, run to a gas station and grab some goodies. This activity or date should not cause a lot of stress, the little things like popping popcorn make all the difference.

  1. Find a Craft or DIY Tutorial to Try

Whether you turn on an episode of Bob Ross or find a project on YouTube to complete, doing something artsy can always be fun without breaking the bank. Enjoy painting a sunset or making a keychain anywhere you want. This can be a fun outing at a park or a peaceful night at home making memories.

  1. Enjoy a School Function

High schools offer various events that are typically free for students. Enjoy the Friday night football game, attend the school’s Spring musical, or go support the dance team at a competition. There are so many activities and events to pick from, there is something for everyone to enjoy, plus you get to support your school and classmates.

High school is a great time to enjoy discovering your interests, your friends, and going on dates. However, these activities should not have to break the bank. Taking time in high school to start good financial habits can help you maintain solid finances in college and life outside of school. Appreciate all the opportunities high school gives you but take control of what you can and spend your time and money wisely. Find some good activities your friend group likes, make some memories, and truly dive into your high school experience.
