Utah State Officials Declare October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – Oct. 1, 2024 – In a pivotal effort to combat domestic violence in the state, Governor Spencer J. Cox and Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson, in collaboration with Altabank™, Division of Glacier Bank and local organizations dedicated to supporting those impacted by domestic violence, have proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Utah. This proclamation highlights the pressing need to increase awareness, encourage prevention, and provide support for victims and survivors throughout the state.

Altabank, which has identified domestic violence and prevention as one of its key pillars of charitable contribution, reasserts its commitment to combating the issue. In addition to its support of this declaration, the bank makes an ongoing effort to support local organizations that offer support to victims and others affected by domestic violence.

“A problem that impacts our entire community requires a collective effort to make things better,” commented Altabank CEO Terry Grant. “Uniting business and government leadership to shine a light on this crucial issue is an important step in addressing domestic violence in Utah. We applaud those who serve victims and seek to amplify their efforts not just this month, but year-round, year in and year out.”

Domestic Violence Month Declaration

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 33.6 percent of Utah women and 21.4 percent of Utah men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes. On a national level, one in three women and one in four men in the United States have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. Experts agree that domestic violence is often underreported; the actual figures are likely greater than those compiled in statistical surveys.

“Domestic violence is a grave and pervasive issue that affects individuals and families across all communities in the state of Utah,” Lt. Gov. Henderson said in the statewide declaration. “By recognizing this month in Utah as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we aim to underscore the urgency of this issue and emphasize the need for continued collaboration and action.”
